{"id":277605,"date":"2018-10-16T11:34:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T09:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=277605"},"modified":"2018-10-16T11:34:39","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T09:34:39","slug":"5-things-you-can-expect-from-black-friday-2018-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/277605\/5-things-you-can-expect-from-black-friday-2018-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"5 things you can expect from Black Friday 2018 in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of South African companies and consumers are already preparing themselves for Black Friday 2018 &#8211; which has quickly become the biggest shopping day of the year in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to BankservAfrica 4.7 million card transaction were processed on Black Friday 2017 &#8211; of which 260,552 were online transactions.<\/p>\n<p>This amounted to R2.5 billion worth of debit and credit card retail transactions, up from R2.3 billion in 2016 &#8211; twice the daily average, it said.<\/p>\n<p>With these vast numbers in mind, BusinessTech spoke to a number of retailers and experts about how best to prepare yourself for Black Friday 2018.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Extended deals<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While Black Friday is set to fall on\u00a023 November 2018, deals will likely extend to the week leading up to, and beyond the official day.<\/p>\n<p>Online retailers are also expected to offer a number of specials on &#8216;Cyber Monday&#8217;, which falls on 26 November in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/215155\/black-friday-vs-cyber-monday-in-south-africa-who-won\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BankservAfrica<\/a><\/strong>, Black Friday shoppers were the most active between <strong>16:00 \u2013 17:00<\/strong> when 395,791 store transactions were processed.<\/p>\n<p>Black Friday also proved to be more popular than Cyber Monday \u2013 260,552 transactions were cleared on Black Friday compared to Cyber Monday\u2019s 129,458.<\/p>\n<p>The most expensive transaction for Black Friday was valued at R1 million while for Cyber Monday, this was R663,041.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sheer size and value of the transactions processed during Black Friday, and the growth experienced on 2016\u2019s figures, reflects the success of this annual shopper\u2019s day,\u201d said Chris Hamilton, CEO of BankservAfrica.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/279509-how-to-prepare-for-black-friday-2018-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyBroadband<\/a> <\/strong>adds that some of the best deals can only be found by waking up early on the day,\u00a0which starts just after midnight on the morning of Black Friday.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>New technology\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Makro has confirmed to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/276937\/makro-has-massive-plans-for-black-friday-2018-including-an-online-drive-thru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessTech<\/a> <\/strong>that its preparations for Black Friday 2018 began at least nine months in advance (around February).<\/p>\n<p>Its preparations include the\u00a0rollout of new technology including a mobile pay-point system which\u00a0will assist consumers to pay for purchases while standing in the queue.<\/p>\n<p>It also plans to increase\u00a0the number of staff and security at all stores to better service customers over Black Friday.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time ever, Makro will introduce an online drive-thru service at it&#8217;s new Riversands store, enabling customers to collect their online selected items.<\/p>\n<p>Other companies have also confirmed to BusinessTech that their Black Friday preparations began months ago, and will include innovative developments &#8211; to be announced closer to the time.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoprite.co.za\/black-friday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shoprite<\/a> <\/strong>is already encouraging users to sign up for a newsletter which will provide all the details on its Black Friday deals.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong> Increase in rip-offs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the increased number of shoppers will naturally lead to an increase in incidents of fraud, there are also a number of Black Friday-specific scams to be aware of.<\/p>\n<p>After Black Friday 2017, online travel retailer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/214249\/you-may-have-been-ripped-off-on-your-black-friday-travel-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travelstart<\/a> <\/strong>warned that a number of unscrupulous travel agents bought their travel deals, marked up the prices and sold them to unsuspecting consumers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It happens often when we run campaigns.
