{"id":279067,"date":"2018-10-27T09:00:27","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=279067"},"modified":"2018-10-26T12:25:48","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T10:25:48","slug":"south-africas-most-popular-retailers-shoprite-vs-pick-n-pay-vs-spar-vs-checkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/279067\/south-africas-most-popular-retailers-shoprite-vs-pick-n-pay-vs-spar-vs-checkers\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s most popular retailers: Shoprite vs Pick n Pay vs Spar vs Checkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa has <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/brcsa.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> <\/strong>its Establishment Survey focusing on products and brands for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The survey is based on the findings of more than 3,000 South Africans weighted to be fully representative of the country&#8217;s demographics.<\/p>\n<p>The average monthly income of these respondents was R12,491 with 16% obtaining a tertiary education, 50% holding a matric, and 33% holding a below matric-level education.<\/p>\n<p>Half (51%) indicated that they were not currently working, while a further 50% indicated that they had children below the age of 15 years living at home.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Survey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-279071 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Survey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"952\" height=\"584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Survey.jpg 952w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Survey-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Survey-768x471.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The most popular place to shop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the survey&#8217;s results, Shoprite is the most popular retail store to shop across South Africa, with 68% of respondents indicating that they shopped at the store from January &#8211; June 2018.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by Mr Price (38%), Pick n Pay (37%),\u00a0 and Pep (34%) &#8211; indicating that South Africans are willing to shop around to find the best deal.<\/p>\n<p>When asked which stores they most often prefer to do their grocery shopping, 45% of respondents said that Shoprite is their first choice, followed by Pick n Pay (17%), Spar (12%) and Checkers (7%).<\/p>\n<p>Notably, a large number of shoppers indicated &#8216;other&#8217;
