{"id":280725,"date":"2018-10-30T11:46:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=280725"},"modified":"2018-10-30T11:52:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:52:54","slug":"south-african-unemployment-rate-climbs-as-the-formal-sector-sheds-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/280725\/south-african-unemployment-rate-climbs-as-the-formal-sector-sheds-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"South African unemployment rate climbs as the formal sector sheds jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stats SA has published its latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey results for the third quarter of the year, showing that South Africa&#8217;s unemployment rate increased marginally to 27.5%.<\/p>\n<p>According to the stats group the South African working-age population increased by 153,000 or 0.4% in the third quarter of 2018 compared to the second quarter of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The number of employed persons increased by 92,000 to 16.4 million and the number of unemployed persons rose by 127,000 to 6.2 million in Q3: 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The absorption rate remained unchanged at 43.1% and the unemployment rate increased by 0.3 of a percentage point to 27.5% in the same period.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded unemployment rate rose 0.1% to 37.3%.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-data.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-280735\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-data.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-data.png 845w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-data-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-data-768x480.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-newsize wp-image-280731\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment.png 856w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Employment-768x349.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The net increase of 92,000 employed people was not enough to compensate for the influx of new job seekers and rise of unemployed persons.<\/p>\n<p>The formal sector saw a reduction of 65,000 jobs in the quarter, while private households shed a further 30,000 jobs.
