{"id":28167,"date":"2012-12-10T10:36:25","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T08:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=28167"},"modified":"2012-12-10T10:38:36","modified_gmt":"2012-12-10T08:38:36","slug":"telkom-vodacom-to-put-sa-back-on-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/28167\/telkom-vodacom-to-put-sa-back-on-track\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom, Vodacom to put SA &#8220;back on track&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vodacom chairman Peter Moyo, along with newly appointed chair at Telkom, Jabu Mabuza, are among 30 leading business executives who have warned that South Africa is in danger of unravelling.<\/p>\n<p>In an advert published in City Press and the Sunday Times, the SA leads have\u00a0committed to ensuring that South Africa\u00a0is put \u201cback on track\u201d\u00a0by supporting the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.npconline.co.za\/MediaLib\/Downloads\/Downloads\/Executive%20Summary-NDP%202030%20-%20Our%20future%20-%20make%20it%20work.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npconline.co.za\/MediaLib\/Downloads\/Downloads\/Executive%20Summary-NDP%202030%20-%20Our%20future%20-%20make%20it%20work.pdf\">National Development Plan<\/a>\u00a0and pledging to \u201cpromote a zero-tolerance approach towards bribery, fraud, corruption and anti-competitive business practices\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The NDP\u00a0aims to &#8220;eliminate\u00a0poverty and reduce inequality by 2030. South Africa\u00a0can realise these goals by drawing on the energies of \u00a0its people, growing an inclusive economy, building\u00a0capabilities, enhancing the capacity of the state, and\u00a0promoting leadership and partnerships\u00a0throughout society&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The signatories included the\u00a0chairpersons and chief executives of AngloGold Ashanti, Old Mutual, FirstRand, Nedbank and Merrill Lynch,\u00a0Mark Cutifani of AngloGold Ashanti and Norman Mbazima of Kumba Iron Ore.<\/p>\n<p>Mabuza and Moyo represent the telecoms sector, while additional names include\u00a0Tiger Brands\u2019 CEO, Peter Matlare, FirstRand chairperson Sizwe Nxasana, and Old Mutual chief executive Ralph Mupita.<\/p>\n<p>The advert warns that\u00a0\u201cour country is in danger of unravelling,\u201d if the issues highlighted in the\u00a0NDP are not addressed.<\/p>\n<p>The group highlighted the current state of South Africa&#8217;s labour relation. \u201cLabour relations are under stress, some have lost confidence in our country\u2019s long-term success and trust has to be rebuilt in key areas of our society? &#8230; We can renew faith in our country\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education is another area of focus.\u00a0\u201cOur overriding goal will be to ensure that the school and university systems equip students with the skills they need to find good jobs and compete in the global marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The signatories also called on\u00a0government\u00a0to step up.\u00a0\u201cWe urge government to leverage and effectively implement existing policies and visions.
