{"id":282724,"date":"2018-11-08T08:16:39","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T06:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=282724"},"modified":"2018-11-08T08:16:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T06:16:39","slug":"these-are-the-new-routes-set-for-the-next-gautrain-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/282724\/these-are-the-new-routes-set-for-the-next-gautrain-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"These are the new routes set for the next Gautrain expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Gautrain is currently\u00a0seeking R4 billion to increase its number of trains by 50% ahead of a potential expansion to other parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-07\/south-africa-s-high-speed-rail-network-seeks-cash-for-new-trains\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong>, the Development Bank of Southern Africa is leading the fundraising &#8211; with Canada\u2019s\u00a0Bombardier, the CRRC Corporation of China and local firm Egoli Rail among the bidders to supply the trains.<\/p>\n<p>The government-owned\u00a0Gautrain\u00a0is also planning to build a second depot, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg notes that the purchases will come ahead of a wider expansion that could see the Gautrain add a further 150 kilometres of track to its 80-kilometre network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New routes\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2017,\u00a0the Gautrain Management Agency\u00a0(GMA) announced that it would be conducting a feasibility study into the expansion of the network, with 12 new train sets also required.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The feasibility study concludes that the extension of the Gautrain rail network will provide significant economic and transport related benefits to the province and the country at large; that it offers value for money, and appropriate risk transfer if procured as a public-private partnership,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>It added that through its modelling process, it became clear that the \u2018cost of doing nothing\u2019 in the province will lead to major road congestion in 2037 &#8211; at which stage cars will travel at an average of 15 kilometres an hour due to doubling of car growth.<\/p>\n<p>The feasibility study identified the following main links and stations of the Gautrain rail network extensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the link between Jabulani via Cosmo City and Samrand to Mamelodi, stations include Roodepoort, Little Falls, Fourways, Sunninghill, Olievenhoutsbosch, Irene, Tshwane East and Hazeldean.<\/li>\n<li>The link between Sandton and Cosmo City has a station at Randburg.<\/li>\n<li>On the link between Rhodesfield and Boksburg there will be a station at East Rand Mall and possible link-up with the OR Tambo International Airport Midfield terminal development.<\/li>\n<li>A future link from Cosmo City to Lanseria Airport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-282740 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-1.jpg 714w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-1-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-282744 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-2.jpg 722w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Gautrain-2-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming soon?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gma.gautrain.co.za\/article\/approval-for-the-expansion-of-the-gautrain-rail-network-not-imminent\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> <\/strong>at the end of October, the GMA said that the feasibility study for the proposed extension plan has now been completed.<\/p>\n<p>This includes extensions to the existing Gautrain system and the feasibility study concludes that the extension project will provide significant economic and transport related benefits to the province, it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However the decision for the extensions is not imminent and currently the GMA is engaging with the National Treasury on additional revenue models and demand studies,&#8221;
