{"id":283444,"date":"2018-11-12T10:17:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T08:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=283444"},"modified":"2018-11-12T10:17:48","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T08:17:48","slug":"new-system-will-give-south-african-matrics-the-chance-to-re-write-all-their-exams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/283444\/new-system-will-give-south-african-matrics-the-chance-to-re-write-all-their-exams\/","title":{"rendered":"New system will give South African matrics the chance to re-write all their exams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed a number of changes to the supplementary exam timetable and structure in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2018, it was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/239063\/supplementary-exams-for-matrics-to-be-scrapped-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> <\/strong>that supplementary exams would be scrapped in favour of a new system that will delay rewrites to the middle of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The way supplementary exams currently work is that any student who failed a matric paper \u2013 or would like an opportunity to do better in one \u2013 can register to rewrite with an extra-curricular set of papers written in the first few months of the new school year.<\/p>\n<p>The department has now confirmed that from 2019, supplementary exams will no longer take place in March but rather in June.<\/p>\n<p>The DBE said that this was primarily because of the number of learners who failed to write the exams in the March period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have noted that on average around 40,000 learners who enrol for supplementary examinations every year do not turn up to write the examinations,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This results in massive wasteful expenditure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The department added that this new system will also give learners enough time for revision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By having these examinations in June, there will adequate time for revision and learners can make use of the comprehensive support material provided through the Second Chance matric support programme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will also allow learners to the opportunity to <strong>rewrite as many subjects as they want<\/strong> as opposed to the current two subjects allowed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The DBE said that\u00a0supplementary exams are bearing fruit as seen with the increase in learners who obtained their National Senior Certificate.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, learners who wrote the supplementary exam and obtained the NSC increased from 401,435 to 411,523 &#8211; an increase of 10,088 candidates.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong> Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/271913\/south-african-schools-will-soon-get-these-3-new-subject-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South African schools will soon get these 3 new subject options<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed a number of major changes to the supplementary exams in South Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":108223,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9872],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-283444","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/283444","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=283444"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/283444\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":283472,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/283444\/revisions\/283472"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/108223"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=283444"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=283444"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=283444"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
