{"id":285890,"date":"2018-11-21T12:37:35","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T10:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=285890"},"modified":"2020-02-24T12:21:43","modified_gmt":"2020-02-24T10:21:43","slug":"this-is-why-its-so-important-to-have-a-degree-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/285890\/this-is-why-its-so-important-to-have-a-degree-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"This is why it&#8217;s so important to have a degree in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Labour has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labour.gov.za\/DocumentCenter\/Reports\/Annual%20Reports\/Job%20Opportunities%20and%20Unemployment%20in%20the%20South%20African%20Labour%20Market\/2017\/Job%20Opportunities%20and%20Unemployment%20in%20the%20South%20African%20Labour%20Market%2020172018.pdf\"><strong>released <\/strong><\/a>its job opportunities and employment report for the 2017\/2018 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>The report is based on a combination of online and newspaper advertisements, with data disaggregated by occupation, industry and province.<\/p>\n<p>It captured 48,309 job vacancy during 2017\/18 financial year, with the\u00a0number of job vacancies advertised constantly declining from the first to the fourth quarter of the\u00a02017\/18 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>Sales and marketing managers were the occupations with the highest demand across the country, followed by the software developers, shop sales assistants and retail and wholesale trade managers.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Job-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-285898 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Job-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"888\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Job-2.jpg 888w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Job-2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Job-2-768x434.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 888px) 100vw, 888px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While managerial and professional occupations continued to attract more people with degree and diploma, those with less than matric educational achievements could found themselves suitable for elementary and services and sales workers\u2019 occupations in the same period,&#8221; the report found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those with grade 12 educational achievements were also relevant across all occupations but they were predominantly attractive for technical occupation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Furthermore, the vocational training and certification was also relevant for professional, technical and skilled agricultural occupations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, 39% of the total jobs advertised as captured in the Department of Labour database were attractive to those with degree or diploma educational achievements, followed with those with grade 12 at 25% in the financial year 2017\/18.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This means that less than 36% of the total job vacancies advertised in 2017\/2018 required people with qualifications below grade 12 certificates &#8211; or were not specified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jobs by field<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jobs-by-field.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-285914 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jobs-by-field.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"891\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jobs-by-field.jpg 891w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jobs-by-field-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jobs-by-field-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Trade and Community fields were the only two industries\u00a0advertised job vacancies attracted all educational categories in 2017\/18.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, job vacancies advertised in finance industry required more people who have passed a degree or a diploma, grade 12, post graduate and the vocational studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is also interesting to see that vocational training and certification, e.g., artisanal skills were in high demand for a person to be employed in the mining and manufacturing industries over the same period,&#8221;
