{"id":287568,"date":"2018-11-28T07:34:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T05:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=287568"},"modified":"2018-11-28T07:34:50","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T05:34:50","slug":"what-to-expect-from-south-africas-new-smoking-and-e-cigarette-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/287568\/what-to-expect-from-south-africas-new-smoking-and-e-cigarette-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"What to expect from South Africa&#8217;s new smoking and e-cigarette laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tobacco company, Phillip Morris, has warned that the introduction of new smoking rules in South Africa may ultimately be harmful because of how they also legislate against e-cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/retail-and-consumer\/2018-11-26-new-tobacco-rules-will-choke-healthier-products-says-philip-morris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessDay<\/a> <\/strong>reports that the company aims to ultimately replace its all its cigarettes with new products that do not produce harmful smoke, including e-cigarettes and new iQOS devices that heat instead of burn tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>However, the introduction of the Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill will prevent the communication and marketing of all tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p>This will effectively prevent\u00a0Phillip Morris from presenting\u00a0healthy alternatives to South African cigarette smokers, said\u00a0Marcelo Nico, Philip Morris\u2019s MD for Southern Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we encourage government to do &#8211; and it\u2019s in the submissions we made on the draft bill &#8211; is to separate the combustion burning of tobacco versus smokeless products like iQOS \u2013 they should be treated differently because this is part of the solution,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New smoking laws<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act aims\u00a0to ban smoking in all public spaces, remove branding from cigarettes packs and control electronic cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals, first mooted in 2015, have garnered significant public interest as they propose a number of strict new smoking laws, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A zero-tolerance policy on in-door smoking in public places (including the removal of designated smoking areas in restaurants);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A ban on outdoor smoking in public places;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>When smoking outside, smokers must be at least 10 metres away from public entrances;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The removal of all signage on cigarette packaging aside from the brand name and warning stickers;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Cigarettes may no longer be publicly displayed by retailers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/287254\/the-most-expensive-medical-aid-schemes-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The most expensive medical aid schemes in South Africa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A number of big changes to South Africa&#8217;s smoking laws will soon come into effect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":230075,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9876],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-287568","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/287568","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=287568"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/287568\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":287580,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/287568\/revisions\/287580"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/230075"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=287568"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=287568"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=287568"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
