{"id":291030,"date":"2018-12-14T10:43:33","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T08:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=291030"},"modified":"2018-12-14T10:43:33","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T08:43:33","slug":"government-to-change-history-curriculum-at-south-african-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/291030\/government-to-change-history-curriculum-at-south-african-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to change history curriculum at South African schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has announced the reappointment of the History Ministerial Task Team (MTT) to overhaul the current history curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>In a gazette published on Friday (14 December), Motshekga said that the terms of reference of the task team will be as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To develop a new History curriculum from Grades 4 -12;<\/li>\n<li>To conduct provincial consultation in the education sector to obtain inputs into the new History Curriculum;<\/li>\n<li>To receive public inputs and comments for consideration, on the new History curriculum;<\/li>\n<li>To screen textbooks to ensure alignment with the new curriculum; and<\/li>\n<li>To propose History Teacher development programmes for both Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and In- Service Teacher Education (reskilling and upskilling).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No date was provided as to when the changes will be made or implemented.<\/p>\n<p>In May, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/260757-new-history-curriculum-may-be-compulsory-in-south-african-high-schools.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyBroadband<\/a> <\/strong>reported on plans to implement a new history curriculum in local schools over seven years, with the subject also set to become compulsory.<\/p>\n<p>Certain academics have welcomed the proposed changes to the history subject in South Africa, as they say the current syllabus downplays aspects like slavery and racism.<\/p>\n<p>The destruction of ancient African civilisations has also been omitted under the current syllabus, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px auto 6px auto;
