MTN aims to deploy a Long Term Evolution (LTE<\/a>) network in Uganda during the coming months, claiming to be the first to offer this technology in East Africa.<\/p>\n

In November 2012,\u00a0MTN SA<\/a>\u00a0went live with the commercial availability of LTE in the Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban regions.<\/p>\n

Popularly known as “4G”, LTE is a “standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals”.<\/p>\n

MTN Uganda says that the network infrastructure upgrade plan will provide speeds of up to 100Mbps.<\/p>\n

In 2013, MTN Uganda said that it plans to invest $70 million added to another $80 million spent in 2012. This investment has been mainly in expanding the network infrastructure to support the mobile subscriber growth as well as rollout new innovative products and digital solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cMTN remains committed to the development of the ICT sector and the Ugandan economy. LTE becomes the new standard determining the level of technology development and offering substantially faster data speed than other technologies\u201d said Mazen Mrou\u00e9<\/a>, MTN Uganda CEO.<\/p>\n

The mobile operator notes that The World Bank estimates that in Africa a 10% rise in broadband penetration is linked to a 1.3% increase in economic growth.<\/p>\n

In terms of network infrastructure, MTN Uganda says it has deployed close to 2,800km of fibre backbones with multiple layers and rings.<\/p>\n

The group said that, over the past six months, it has rolled out 81 new base transmission sites to new coverage areas while commissioning another batch of capacity sites. MTN had a total of 1,100 sites at the end of 2012.<\/p>\n
