{"id":29358,"date":"2013-01-07T15:38:40","date_gmt":"2013-01-07T13:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=29358"},"modified":"2016-11-25T13:41:19","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T11:41:19","slug":"capitec-fingers-absa-in-banking-glitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/29358\/capitec-fingers-absa-in-banking-glitch\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitec fingers Absa in banking glitch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Capitec\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3081-Capitec\">Capitec<\/a> says that a delay in its processing of transactions over December 2012 is tied to <a title=\"Absa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1877-Absa-Bank\">Absa<\/a>-supported card machines.<\/p>\n<p>Capitec was hit with complaints on Monday (7 January) after users experienced some point of sale deductions due in December 2012 only being effected on Sunday (6 January).<\/p>\n<p>Capitec\u00a0apologized\u00a0to users and explained that this was due to some merchants banking their Point of Sale Machines late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis meant that purchases done earlier only reflected on some clients\u2019 accounts today (6 January),&#8221; the bank said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no way to force merchants to bank their machines daily. Machines can be linked to any bank,\u201d Capitec said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up statement, Capitec pointed to Absa-supported card machines as the culprit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can confirm that all these transactions debited late on our clients\u2019 accounts were done at Absa-supported card machines during the period 13 to 18 December 2012,&#8221; Capitec said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In particular the majority of these transactions occurred at retailers supported by Absa and who have the card machine integrated into their own till systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bank said further that the late submission of transactions by Absa was unusual but not outside the interbank card system rules.\u00a0&#8220;It is still uncertain how many of other banks\u2019 clients were also affected,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Capitec reiterated that no Capitec Bank clients had a double deduction of the same amount on their account.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Absa&#8217;s response<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Absa experienced a system problem in processing card transactions from some of our retailers from the 16th to 18 December 2012. Only transactions processed through the MasterCard International clearing system were affected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After identifying the problem internally, it was rectified, Absa said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The transaction being presented now for debit to the client\u2019s account is still a valid transaction, completing the original purchase transaction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In order to ensure that we make our customers\u2019 lives much easier, measures have been put in place to ensure this processing error does not re-occur.
