{"id":294066,"date":"2019-01-17T15:26:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T13:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=294066"},"modified":"2019-01-17T15:26:14","modified_gmt":"2019-01-17T13:26:14","slug":"foreign-holdings-of-south-africa-debt-lowest-in-nearly-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/294066\/foreign-holdings-of-south-africa-debt-lowest-in-nearly-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign holdings of South Africa debt lowest in nearly two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Foreign ownership of South African government debt is declining, but that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing.<\/p>\n<p>Non-resident holdings of the country\u2019s bonds dropped to 38% at the end of December, from a high of 43% in March, according to National Treasury data.<\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s most-industrialized economy relies on portfolio inflows to help finance a persistent current-account deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Foreigners have been more than happy, historically, to buy in as real rates on South African government debt are attractive &#8211; among the highest in investment-rated developing nations.<\/p>\n<p>But significant foreign ownership has also meant that any risk event can quickly turn inflows into outflows, as seen last year.<\/p>\n<p>Foreigners sold a net R57.5 billion ($4.2 billion) of the debt in 2018, the most in a year since Bloomberg started compiling the data in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that lighter foreigner positioning provides a buffer to the risk of a downgrade by Moody\u2019s, according to Guillaume Tresca, a senior emerging market strategist at Credit Agricole, in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>Moody\u2019s is scheduled to reassess the country\u2019s credit rating at the end of the first quarter, and again in November.
