{"id":294532,"date":"2019-01-27T11:00:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-27T09:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=294532"},"modified":"2019-01-25T16:44:44","modified_gmt":"2019-01-25T14:44:44","slug":"the-worlds-most-respected-professions-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/294532\/the-worlds-most-respected-professions-in-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"The world\u2019s most respected professions in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey conducted in 35 countries by the global education charity\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.varkeyfoundation.org\/media\/4790\/gts-index-9-11-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Varkey Foundation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0canvassed opinions on 14 typical graduate occupations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>In each nation, 1,000 members of the general public were asked to rank the list of professions from the most respected (14th) to the least (1st).<\/p>\n<p>Doctors topped the global list, followed by lawyers and then engineers.<\/p>\n<p>Head teachers also met with approval, but there was less respect for those further down the pedagogical ladder \u2013 secondary and primary school teachers lagged behind police officers, nurses, accountants, local government managers and management consultants.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Most-respected.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-294538 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Most-respected.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Most-respected.png 914w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Most-respected-269x300.png 269w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Most-respected-768x857.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Replaced by robots?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While certain professions will always appear to demand more respect than others, the WEF has warned that the above list may look very different as automation becomes common place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The World Economic Forum\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Future of Jobs Report 2018<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0states that almost 50% of companies surveyed expect automation to reduce their full-time workforce by 2022.<\/p>\n<p>But the report also notes that while automation may displace 75 million jobs, 133 million new ones could emerge, with in-demand roles to include data analysts and scientists as well as software and applications developers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>It also states that 38% of businesses surveyed expect to extend their workforce to new productivity-enhancing roles.
