{"id":295746,"date":"2019-01-29T08:22:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T06:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=295746"},"modified":"2019-01-29T08:33:09","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T06:33:09","slug":"apple-has-made-spending-r20000-on-a-phone-the-new-normal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/295746\/apple-has-made-spending-r20000-on-a-phone-the-new-normal\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple has made spending R20,000 on a phone the new normal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Counterpoint Research has released its latest Market Pulse report, detailing the most popular types of phones around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The report found that the global premium smartphone segment (phones that cost $400 or more) has continued to grow faster than the overall smartphone market on the back of strong sales from Apple, Samsung and Huawei.<\/p>\n<p>Within this premium segment, the $800+ (R11,000) ultra-premium segment has been growing the fastest, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 2017 it was merely 8% of the premium market (defined as $400+),&#8221; Counterpoint said. &#8220;However, since the Apple iPhone X was introduced, prices have jumped to a new level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 2018, the new flagship of Apple (XS, XS Max), Samsung (Note 9) and Google (Pixel 3 XL) were all launched above the $800 price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of note is that these dollar\u00a0comparisons do not necessarily reflect actual South African prices, with the iPhone X launching at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/smartphones\/237882-iphone-x-official-south-african-pricing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R20,499<\/a> <\/strong>in November 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This data dovetails with Counterpoint&#8217;s recent consumer research which found that consumers are now willing to spend more on their device, but at the same time holding on for a longer period.<\/p>\n<p>This has led to the overall market growth slowing, but an expansion in the premium segment, it said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Counterpoint.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-295752 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Counterpoint.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Counterpoint.png 656w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Counterpoint-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Going forward, the trend of premium smartphones is likely to continue,&#8221;
