{"id":296116,"date":"2019-01-30T10:24:43","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T08:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=296116"},"modified":"2019-01-30T10:25:37","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T08:25:37","slug":"shoprite-shares-have-just-seen-their-biggest-drop-since-1999-after-profit-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/296116\/shoprite-shares-have-just-seen-their-biggest-drop-since-1999-after-profit-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"Shoprite shares have just seen their biggest drop since 1999"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shoprite Holdings Ltd. shares slumped the most since 1999 after Africa\u2019s biggest grocer said first-half earnings dropped as much as 26%, with South African food deflation and IT troubles compounding weakness in the rest of the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Shoprite has more than 2,500 stores throughout Africa, yet a considerable majority are in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>That exposes the company to the depressed consumer environment in the continent\u2019s most industrialised economy, which particularly affects its core lower-income customers.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside food-price deflation and rising costs in essentials such as electricity and security, Shoprite struggled with the introduction of a new IT system and some industrial action.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s little sign of any economic improvement either, though the company insists it can rely on customer support for its brands.<\/p>\n<p>In countries elsewhere in Africa, Shoprite\u2019s problems aren\u2019t new.<\/p>\n<p>A massive devaluation in the Angolan currency (and, to a lesser extent, in Zambia and Nigeria) has hurt conversion to the rand and driven up import costs.
