{"id":296470,"date":"2019-01-31T11:29:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T09:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=296470"},"modified":"2019-01-31T12:20:45","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T10:20:45","slug":"government-institutions-must-cancel-vodacom-contracts-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/296470\/government-institutions-must-cancel-vodacom-contracts-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Government institutions must cancel Vodacom contracts: Lesufi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has requested all South Africans to stop using Vodacom products and services, in a bid to put pressure on the mobile network, MyBroadband reports.<\/p>\n<p>Lesufi made the statement as part of a campaign supporting Kenneth Makate, who is in a battle with Vodacom over his involvement in the company\u2019s Please Call Me service.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom has reportedly offered Makate <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business-telecoms\/294240-vodacom-offered-makate-r49-million-and-he-said-no.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>R49 million<\/strong><\/a> as compensation for his Please Call Me idea, but Makate has rejected the offer.<\/p>\n<p>Following the rejection, Lesufi held a press conference to voice his support for Makate.<\/p>\n<p>Lesufi has called on South Africans to support Makate, and stated that he must be compensated for his idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a serious commercial injustice here,\u201d said\u00a0Lesufi.<\/p>\n<p>If Vodacom fails to pay Makate by 1 February, it will result in the following measures being taken, said Lesufi.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All Vodacom products will be boycotted.<\/li>\n<li>South Africans must not attend any Vodacom-sponsored event.<\/li>\n<li>All Vodacom contract users must cancel their contracts.<\/li>\n<li>All Vodacom users must take airtime and data advances and refuse to pay for them.<\/li>\n<li>All people must stop buying Vodacom data.<\/li>\n<li>Government institutions must cancel their Vodacom contracts.<\/li>\n<li>Vodafone will be contacted over how Vodacom is handling this matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A final resolution between Vodacom and Makate must be found by 28 February, stated Lesufi.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite Vodacom saying it is ready and willing to pay Makate, and it is up to him to accept their offer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P38p4lweBU4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\">&lt;span<br \/>\ndata-mce-type=&#8221;bookmark&#8221;
