{"id":296638,"date":"2019-02-01T08:15:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T06:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=296638"},"modified":"2019-02-01T08:15:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T06:15:09","slug":"vodacom-says-it-would-have-to-close-shop-if-it-paid-makate-r70-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/296638\/vodacom-says-it-would-have-to-close-shop-if-it-paid-makate-r70-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom says it would have to close shop if it paid Makate R70 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vodacom says that it will not pay anywhere near the R70 billion that the \u2018Please Call Me Movement\u2019 claims is owed to Kenneth Makate for his Please Call Me idea \u2013 almost a third of the company\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/VOD:SJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market cap<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on eNCA on Thursday, and as reported by the African News Agency, head of legal and regulatory affairs at Vodacom, Nkateko Nyoka said that Vodacom group CEO, Shameel Joosub had determined an amount to be paid to Makate, which is &#8220;final and binding&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We certainly not going to go anywhere near R70 billion. Mr Makate&#8217;s claim is against Vodacom South Africa and the service revenue of Vodacom South Africa is about R54 billion. If we were to pay R70 billion, it means Vodacom South Africa must close shop tomorrow,&#8221; Nyoka said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are willing and ready to pay Mr Makate the amount of compensation that has been determined by the Vodacom group CEO as reasonable and fair compensation.
