{"id":29801,"date":"2013-01-15T02:15:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T00:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=29801"},"modified":"2013-01-15T09:26:33","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T07:26:33","slug":"kalahari-com-reports-big-revenue-spike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/29801\/kalahari-com-reports-big-revenue-spike\/","title":{"rendered":"Kalahari.com reports big revenue spike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Online retailer, <a title=\"Kalahari.com\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6274-kalahari-com\">Kalahari.com<\/a> saw a 40% jump in revenue in November and December 2012, led by sales in the Gobii 7\u201dcolour eReader.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, MD of <a title=\"World Wide Worx\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1911-World-Wide-Worx\">World Wide Worx<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Arthur Goldstuck\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1912-Arthur-Goldstuck\">Arthur Goldstuck<\/a>\u00a0noted that e-commerce in South Africa was growing at a rate of about 30% annually.<\/p>\n<p>Research published by World Wide Worx, found that SA\u2019s internet economy contributed 2% to the national GDP and was forecast to reach 2.5% by 2016.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Liz Hillock\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6819-Liz-Hillock\">Liz Hillock<\/a>, head of marketing at Kalahari.com told BusinessTech: \u201cWe had an increase of over 40% in revenue and it was a very strong festive season for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hillock said that the Gobii eReader was company\u2019s biggest tech seller, and the biggest selling product overall. This was followed by Fifty Shades of Grey in both physical and ebook format.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectronics did exceptionally well overall during festive, with digital and SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras and tablets also strong,\u201d Hillock said, adding that the biggest selling appliance was the Biltong Maker.<\/p>\n<p>Kalahari.com launched a dedicated \u2018Scan and Shop\u2019 mobile app in December for both <a title=\"iOS\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4613-iOS-%28Operating-System%29\">iOS<\/a> and <a title=\"Android\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1754-Android\">Android<\/a>. \u201cBasically you scan a barcode at the mall and the item then searches on Kalahari and displays our price,\u201d the marketing lead said.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to 2013, Hillock said that the retailer would be moving to a new warehouse in April, \u201cwhich is very exciting, something we\u2019ve needed to do as we\u2019ve grown considerably.
