{"id":29859,"date":"2013-01-15T11:10:40","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T09:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=29859"},"modified":"2013-01-15T12:47:51","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T10:47:51","slug":"the-highest-consumer-debt-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/29859\/the-highest-consumer-debt-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"SA&#8217;s most indebted province"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng has the highest consumer debt per capita of all nine provinces and accounts for almost half of total consumer debt held in SA\u201a the latest SA survey by the <a title=\"Institute of Race Relations\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6804-South-African-Institute-of-Race-Relations-SAIRR\">Institute of Race Relations<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p>The survey monitors long-term trends in society\u201a politics and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Using official figures from the National Credit Regulator\u201a the institute found that the average individual in Gauteng owes R4\u201a260.<\/p>\n<p>Forms of debt include mortgage agreements\u201a secured credit\u201a unsecured credit\u201a credit facilities\u201a and short-term credit transactions.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Cape accounted for 14% of the total debt owed in SA\u201a and had the second highest debt per capita at R2\u201a700 per person.<\/p>\n<p>The province with the lowest per capita debt was Limpopo\u201a which accounted for 4% of the total debt owed in SA\u201a with R750 per capita.<\/p>\n<p>Data also showed that total consumer debt in the country increased from R85bn in 2011 to R104bn in 2012\u201a or by R19bn.
