{"id":300766,"date":"2019-02-21T18:02:44","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=300766"},"modified":"2019-02-21T17:02:53","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T15:02:53","slug":"10-things-which-are-more-expensive-in-south-africa-compared-to-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/300766\/10-things-which-are-more-expensive-in-south-africa-compared-to-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"10 things which are more expensive in South Africa compared to last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consumer inflation dropped to 4.0% in January 2019, down from 4.5% in December 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to Statistics South Africa, this is now the lowest annual rate since March 2018 when headline inflation came in at 3.8%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The drop in consumer inflation over the past few months is primarily the result of a series of cuts in the fuel price,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fuel has a hefty share of 4,6% of the total CPI, which means that changes in the fuel price easily influence month-to-month changes in the headline figure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The petrol price (inland 95-octane) dropped by R1.23 per litre and diesel by R1.54 in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in a 10.2% monthly slump in the fuel index, the biggest monthly drop since January 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The graph below compares overall CPI inflation (blue line) with what CPI inflation would have been if the direct influence of fuel is removed (orange line).<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-300768 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1131\" height=\"860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel.jpg 1131w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel-768x584.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Fuel-1024x779.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1131px) 100vw, 1131px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Price increases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the major contributor to the rise in overall inflation in 2018 was the fuel price, there were a number of other notable increases.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest climbers were green\/red\/yellow peppers which have increased in price by 27.2% over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Other large increases in price include tomatoes (26.8%), sweet potatoes (20.1%) and Rooibos tea (19.4%).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and rooibos tea experienced the biggest annual price rises in January,&#8221;
