{"id":304528,"date":"2019-03-11T09:29:01","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T07:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=304528"},"modified":"2019-03-11T09:40:03","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T07:40:03","slug":"new-south-african-licence-fee-increases-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/304528\/new-south-african-licence-fee-increases-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"New car licence fee increases announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African motorists can expect to pay much more in national licensing transaction fees in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>This was confirmed by a government gazette <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/gcis_document\/201903\/42291gon376.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> <\/strong>on Friday (8 March) in which minister of Transport, Blade Nzimande, announced a 14% increase in the transaction fees to be paid to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>fees will increase by R10<\/strong> \u2013 from R72 to R82, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of\u00a0The<em>\u00a0<\/em>Road Traffic Management Corporation Act, local registering authorities (licensing centres) must pay the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) a transaction fee for each motorist it processes. This is subsequently passed on to the applicant and added to the annual licence fee.<\/p>\n<p>This fee separate from the actual licence fee, with the R82 effectively added to the renewal costs for all motor vehicle licenses across the country.<\/p>\n<p>No implementation date was provided with interested parties given four weeks to comment on the increases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big increases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While a 14% increase may seem minor, it is the second major increase in the RTMC fee in as many years.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2018 the fee <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/203508\/government-increases-vehicle-licence-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>increased by R30<\/strong> <\/a>\u2013 from R42 to R72 &#8211; with motorists now effectively paying twice as much compared to January last year.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this increase in 2018, the fee has increased by a mere R6 since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>This increase will affect South African motorists across the country, with the\u00a0actual licensing fee differing from province to province, dependent on the size and weight of your vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/296500\/here-are-the-western-capes-new-car-licence-fees-for-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Western Cape<\/a><\/strong>, a motorcyclist can expect to pay R192 (2019) for a new licence while motorists can pay anywhere between R288\u00a0 to R966 to renew their annual licence.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, Gauteng motorists can expect to pay between R204 &#8211; R972 (2018) for their vehicle licence, and R204 for a motorcycle licence.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/303598\/south-africas-new-demerit-system-set-to-be-signed-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Africa\u2019s new demerit system set to be signed into law<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South African motorists can expect to pay more in national licensing transaction fees in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":203530,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11119],"tags":[26,10273],"class_list":["post-304528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-motoring","tag-headline","tag-rtmc"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/304528","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=304528"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/304528\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":304546,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/304528\/revisions\/304546"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/203530"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=304528"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=304528"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=304528"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
