{"id":30472,"date":"2013-01-24T11:00:21","date_gmt":"2013-01-24T09:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=30472"},"modified":"2013-01-28T14:59:38","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T12:59:38","slug":"level-3-enters-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/30472\/level-3-enters-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Level 3 enters South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Level 3 Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6998-Level-3-Communications\">Level 3 Communications<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s largest IP services providers, is set to launch a wide range of IP products and services in South Africa. This includes international IP transit services, CDNs, broadcast services and MPLS VPN products.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Peter Davies\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6999-Peter-Davies\">Peter Davies<\/a>, Level 3\u2019s master agent for Africa, told MyBroadband that the company&#8217;s first CDN offerings are already live. Most of the other services \u2013 including IP transit offerings \u2013 will be operational by mid-April.<\/p>\n<p>Level 3 is establishing an IP node in Johannesburg \u2013 in the vendor-neutral <a title=\"Teraco\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5182-Teraco\">Teraco<\/a> data centre \u2013 and will complement this presence with a Cape Town node later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Davies said that Level 3 is currently in negotiations with all the submarine cable system companies in South Africa, and will offer services over all these systems in future. This includes <a title=\"SAT-3\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1981-Sat-3-wasc\">SAT-3<\/a>, <a title=\"EASSy\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1984-EASSy-Eastern-Africa-Submarine-Cable-System\">EASSy<\/a>, <a title=\"SEACOM\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1983-Seacom\">SEACOM<\/a> and WACS.<\/p>\n<p>Davies highlighted that Level 3 will be offering the full suite of products available from the company, globally. As an international tier 1 provider, he said, local providers can expect better connectivity, higher speeds and an overall great experience.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Great international bandwidth prices<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_30478\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Level-3-international-network.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30478\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30478\" title=\"Level 3 international network\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Level-3-international-network.jpg\" alt=\"Level 3 international network\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Level-3-international-network.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Level-3-international-network-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Level 3 international network<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two local Internet Service providers (ISPs), which have been contacted by Level 3, told MyBroadband that the international bandwidth and transit prices from Level 3 are very aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>According to these ISPs, the Level 3 rates are significantly lower than current market prices from providers like <a title=\"Neotel\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2383-Neotel\">Neotel<\/a> and <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Davies downplayed its apparent lower prices, saying that it is the overall value proposition which is the biggest draw-card for South African operators and service providers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Level 3 not completely new to South Africa<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_30481\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30481\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30481\" title=\"Derek Hershaw - MWEB\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg\" alt=\"Derek Hershaw - MWEB\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Derek Hershaw &#8211; MWEB<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Level 3 is not completely new to South Africa.
