{"id":30563,"date":"2013-01-25T09:53:04","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T07:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=30563"},"modified":"2013-01-25T10:22:45","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T08:22:45","slug":"samsung-blow-to-apple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/30563\/samsung-blow-to-apple\/","title":{"rendered":"Samsung blow to Apple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data out on Friday (25 January) shows that <a title=\"Samsung\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1813-Samsung\">Samsung<\/a> extended its lead over <a title=\"Apple\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1648-Apple\">Apple<\/a> and <a title=\"Nokia\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1650-Nokia-Corporation\">Nokia<\/a> in global smartphone shipments, capturing 30.4% (20% in 2011) marketshare in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Market research firm, <a title=\"Strategy Analytics\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6181-Strategy-Analytics\">Strategy Analytics<\/a> revealed that Samsung sold 213 million smartphones last year, while rival Apple shipped 135.8 million smartphones worldwide for a 19% marketshare, broadly flat from the 19% level recorded in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Global smartphone shipments grew 43% annually to reach a record 700 million units in 2012, Strategy Analytics said.<\/p>\n<p>The growth of Samsung and Apple has continued to impact Nokia. The division accounted for 62% of overall profit, up from 55% before.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Apple reported revenue of $54.5 billion in Q1 2013 financial results for the quarter that ended in December 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The tech giant said it sold 22.9 million iPads, 47.8 million iPhones, 5.3 million iPods, and million 4.1 Macs.<\/p>\n<p>While the company reported quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion, it wasn\u2019t enough to alleviate market concern over the group\u2019s loosened grip on the smartphone market.<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u2019s shares fell more than 12% on Thursday, shaving $50 billion from the company\u2019s market value.
