{"id":305718,"date":"2019-03-18T08:19:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T06:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=305718"},"modified":"2019-03-18T08:22:28","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T06:22:28","slug":"trump-sends-us-officials-to-investigate-land-expropriation-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/305718\/trump-sends-us-officials-to-investigate-land-expropriation-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump sends US officials to investigate land expropriation in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of US officials visited South Africa at the request of President Donald Trump as part of an investigation into the country&#8217;s land expropriation process.<\/p>\n<p>Trump raised eyebrows in 2018 after he <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/266847\/trump-asks-his-secretary-of-state-to-study-land-expropriation-and-farm-killings-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> <\/strong>that the South African government was &#8216;seizing land from white farmers&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Trump asked his secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, to study the seizure and expropriation of land in South Africa, along with the killing of farmers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netwerk24.com\/Nuus\/Politiek\/sos-na-trump-20190316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rapport,<\/a><\/strong> the US delegation &#8211; including deputy secretary of state John J. Sullivan, and the US deputy ambassador to South Africa Jessye Lapenn &#8211; met with AgriSA, Grain SA, and ANC officials on Friday (15 March) to discuss how the land expropriation process may impact property rights in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In the meeting, AgriSA highlighted the recently released <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agrisa.co.za\/news\/d2380c40c645d7b52611272c347616ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list of land expropriation<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agrisa.co.za\/news\/d2380c40c645d7b52611272c347616ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> targets<\/a><\/strong> in the Northern Cape and warned that the ANC would bring about an &#8220;economic catastrophe&#8221; if it planned to expropriate farms that were an essential part of the South African economy.<\/p>\n<p>The group also discussed the high rate of farm murders in the country, with AgriSA asking the US government to intervene to help prevent land grabs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/2019-03-17-us-urges-more-transparency-on-land-reform-in-sa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press briefing<\/a> <\/strong>following the meeting, Sullivan said that the South African government needed to do more to ensure the land expropriation process was transparent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Land reform has received significant attention &#8211; but there is a lot of misinformation in the US.
