{"id":306118,"date":"2019-03-19T15:04:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=306118"},"modified":"2019-03-19T15:04:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:04:41","slug":"standard-bank-warns-of-new-fraud-department-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/306118\/standard-bank-warns-of-new-fraud-department-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Standard Bank warns of new &#8216;fraud department&#8217; scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Standard Bank has issued a warning about a new scam targeting its customers.<\/p>\n<p>The bank said that fraudsters were contacting customers and impersonating Standard Bank fraud department personnel.<\/p>\n<p>The scammers then request one-time passwords (OTPs) used to perform online transactions, the bank said.<\/p>\n<p>Standard Bank said that customers should never share their OTPs with anyone.<\/p>\n<p>It also warned customers to never share the number on the bank of their bank card or the card&#8217;s expiry date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scam cases increasing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Absa also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/304560\/absa-reports-big-jump-in-digital-and-card-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>urged <\/strong><\/a>customers to be vigilant against any attempt to dupe them into handing over their \u201ckeys to the safe\u201d \u2013 card PIN, card CVV, card one-time PIN (OTP), online banking PIN, online banking password \u2013 to third parties.<\/p>\n<p>Citing external studies, Absa said that during the first half of 2018, 4.5 billion customer data records globally were reported to have been compromised \u2013 86% of all consumer information has been compromised through spam emails and data breaches.
