The Hoffman committee set up by MTN<\/a> to investigate Turkcell<\/a>‘s claims against it will reportedly present its findings to the MTN board in the next few months.<\/p>\n

In March 2012, the Turkish-based telecoms firm, Turkcell filed a complaint in U.S. District Court of Columbia, Washington DC, against MTN Group, demanding $4.2 billion in damages over the award of the cellular licence in Iran in 2004.<\/p>\n

TurkCell claimed that MTN used political and monetary lures to enhance its relationships and leverage its position within Iran.<\/p>\n

MTN\u2019s board of directors appointed a special committee to investigate the allegations made by Turkcell, chaired by independent jurist, Lord Leonard Hoffmann.<\/p>\n

MTN said that it regards Turkcell\u2019s allegations and legal tactics as “mischievous and unwarranted”, saying further that the operator would put full confidence in the Hoffman committee’s findings.<\/p>\n

“MTN is confident that Lord Hoffmann\u2019s report will be thorough and independent, and allow the company to draw a line under these allegations,\u201d the operator said.<\/p>\n

Report release<\/h3>\n

According to a report in the Sowetan, MTN spokesman, Paul Newman said that the company expects the Hoffmann report to be presented to MTN executives sometime in the next two months.<\/p>\n

“We expect the report to be tabled before the MTN Group board during the first quarter of 2013,” he was reported as saying.<\/p>\n

BusinessTech approached the operator for more clarity on the timelines attached to the Hoffmann commission and findings, but the operator did not give any response.<\/p>\n

The Turkcell vs MTN court battle is currently on hold, pending a U.S. Supreme Court ruling whether the case can be heard in a US court.<\/p>\n
