{"id":310194,"date":"2019-04-10T10:01:57","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T08:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=310194"},"modified":"2019-04-10T10:01:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T08:01:57","slug":"nissan-to-pump-r3-billion-into-south-africa-for-new-navara-bakkie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/310194\/nissan-to-pump-r3-billion-into-south-africa-for-new-navara-bakkie\/","title":{"rendered":"Nissan to pump R3 billion into South Africa for new Navara bakkie"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Nissan Motor Co plans to invest a further R3 billion ($213 million) in its South African plant to prepare for production of the latest version of the Navara pickup.<\/p>\n<p>The decision by the Japanese carmaker may add 30,000 units to the plant\u2019s current annual volume of 35,000, Mike Whitfield, managing director of Nissan Africa, said at the factory north of Pretoria on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacture of the Navara from 2020 will also create jobs in a country where more than one in four of the population are unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAutomotive is already the largest part of South Africa\u2019s manufacturing sector, contributing around 7% of gross domestic product annually and accounting for a third of manufacturing output,\u201d South African president Cyril Ramaphosa said at the Nissan facility in Rosslyn.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan\u2019s investment is the first significant commitment by an automaker since international firms agreed with the government late last year to extend a manufacturing incentive program through 2035.
