Myanmar represents one of the most attractive growth opportunities globally at present,&#8221; said Rich Mkhondo, executive, group corporate affairs, MTN.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly, MTN is actively evaluating the opportunity to participate in the process being run by the Myanmar (Burma) government to issue two new telecoms licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar based publication,\u00a0<a title=\"Eleven Media Group\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7124-Eleven-Media-Group\">Eleven Media Group<\/a>\u00a0had earlier reported that MTN held discussions with officials at the Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration (DICA) about a tender calling for bids to become an operator in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The tender for two new mobile networks in\u00a0Myanmar\u00a0was announced on January 15 by the Telecommunication Operator Tender Evaluation and Selection Committee.<\/p>\n<p>A number of other global operators are believed to have submitted\u00a0expressions of interest in acquiring a licence, including\u00a0<a title=\"Bharti Airtel\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1917-Airtel\">Bharti Airtel<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"SingTel\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1916-Singtel\">SingTel<\/a>, Norwegian firm\u00a0<a title=\"Telenor\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4977-Telenor\">Telenor<\/a>, Digicel, and Malaysia\u2019s U Mobile.<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar\u2019s Communications and Information Technology Ministry said it aims to lift its mobile penetration rate, currently at about 10%, to about 80% by 2016 through the new licences.
