{"id":31191,"date":"2013-02-05T15:04:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T13:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=31191"},"modified":"2013-02-06T10:22:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T08:22:21","slug":"what-4afrika-means-for-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/software\/31191\/what-4afrika-means-for-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"What 4Afrika means for SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"Department of Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2129-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">Department of Communications<\/a> has thrown its support behind <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1715-Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a>&#8216;s 4Afrika initiative, which aims to tackle the high rate of unemployment in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Launched by Microsoft on Tuesday (5 February 2012), 4Afrika\u00a0looks to actively engage in Africa\u2019s economic development to improve its global competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>By 2016, the 4Afrika Initiative plans to help place tens of millions of smart devices in the hands of African youth, and bring one million African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) online.<\/p>\n<p>It also hopes to upskill 100,000 members of Africa\u2019s existing workforce, and help an additional 100,000 recent graduates develop employability skills, 75% of whom Microsoft will help place in jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 4Afrika launch event in Johannesburg, Microsoft SA managing director, <a title=\"Mteto Nyati\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7154-Mteto-Nyati\">Mteto Nyati<\/a> explained that the initiative was a purely African project, born from Africans to tackle African problems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We (Africans) are consumers of other people&#8217;s intellectual property &#8211; that&#8217;s not good. We have to turn this around,&#8221; the MD said.<\/p>\n<p>To drive this change, Microsoft is equipping Africans with the tools to &#8220;[help] our (African) countries to be globally competitive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is just the beginning,&#8221; Nyati said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31192\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Mteto-Nyati.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31192\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31192\" title=\"Mteto Nyati\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Mteto-Nyati.jpg\" alt=\"Mteto Nyati\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Mteto-Nyati.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Mteto-Nyati-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mteto Nyati<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Looking at South Africa<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking specifically about the 4Africa initiative in South Africa, Nyati said that the 4Afrika initiative would work in line with the National Development Plan with a vision for 2030.<\/p>\n<p>However, instead of focussing on all aspects of the NDP, 4Afrika would focus on one key area in South Africa: unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are 19 years into our democracy&#8230;the only thing that can ruin this miracle (of South Africa)..is the huge problem of unemployment amongst the youth,&#8221; Nyati said.<\/p>\n<p>Through the 4Africa initiative, Microsoft South Africa is looking to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop 700+ app per year through the Application Factory;<\/li>\n<li>Employ 3,000 graduates within the Microsoft ecosystem;<\/li>\n<li>Boost 200 startups in small and medium enterprises &#8211; while supporting over 100,000, giving them opportunity to grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To do this, Nyati said Microsoft SA would work with government to make the Internet more accessible to the population.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Support from government<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking at the event, deputy minister of communications, <a title=\"Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7155-Stella-Tembisa-Ndabeni-Abrahams\">Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams<\/a> pledged support for the initiative, on behalf of government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to make technology affordable, available and accessible,&#8221; everything is under control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The deputy minister went on to say that through partnering with the <a title=\"ANC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2387-ANC-African-National-Congress\">ANC<\/a> &#8211; as the leaders of South Africa and Africa &#8211; businesses will aid the ruling party in making the goals of the initiative a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Ndabeni-Abrahams said that she was pleased to see local companies, such as <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>, forming part of the initiative, but expressed that she would like to see partnerships extend to other companies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We assure that the policies we develop will help business do what they need to do to develop skills in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As government, we will never do it alone&#8230;It&#8217;s important that we reach all corners of South Africa,&#8221;
