but weaken in the 30 days afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The outlier was 2009, when the rand was recovering from a record low reached during the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rand-graph.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-313722 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rand-graph.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rand-graph.png 800w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rand-graph-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rand-graph-768x467.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With South African elections nine days away, political bickering is intensifying, but with little effect on the rand, said Bianca Botes, corporate treasury manager at Peregrine Treasury Solutions.<\/p>\n<p>However financial analysts are currently awaiting the results of South Africa\u2019s national elections with bated breath, as the country recovers from a weaker rand, load shedding and high oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbcafrica.com\/videos\/2019\/04\/23\/oil-spikes-to-six-month-high-heres-what-it-means-for-sa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC Africa<\/a><\/strong>, Tsitsi Hatendi-Matika, head of Retail Investment Specialist at Absa\u2019s Wealth and Investment Management, said that the rand is currently predicted to be on track for the R14\/dollar mark after the elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, she cautioned that this does not account for the recent spike in oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>In the event that elections provide an unexpected result \u2013 such as a president who doesn\u2019t get the majority vote \u2013 the rand\u2019s levels could differ dramatically, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The analyst said that \u2018black swan events\u2019 by their nature cannot be anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>A black swan is an event or occurrence that deviates beyond what is normally expected of a situation and is extremely difficult to predict.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Should things go extreme and not how the market expect them to go \u2013 you could see the rand head to <strong>R15 or even R16\/dollar<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/312662\/how-salaries-in-south-africa-are-expected-to-increase-over-the-next-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How salaries in South Africa are expected to increase over the next year<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s rand could be in for a difficult time after the elections, history shows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":114834,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11121],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-313720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/313720","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=313720"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/313720\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":313752,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/313720\/revisions\/313752"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/114834"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=313720"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=313720"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=313720"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
