{"id":313946,"date":"2019-04-29T15:01:04","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T13:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=313946"},"modified":"2019-04-29T15:01:04","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T13:01:04","slug":"durban-cant-issue-fines-using-its-speed-cameras-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/313946\/durban-cant-issue-fines-using-its-speed-cameras-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Durban can&#8217;t issue fines using its speed cameras &#8211; for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ethekwini Metro Police and National Prosecuting Authority are currently at an impasse which has led to a large number of speeding fines not being issued.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/mercury\/news\/traffic-violations-unpunished-for-the-past-two-years-22166246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mercury<\/a> <\/strong>reports that the conflict &#8211; caused by a dispute over the financial model used to issue and collect money for fines &#8211; has meant that the city&#8217;s metro police have not issued a single speeding fine in the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>These include offences caught on static cameras, and motorists who failed to stop at red lights and drove in lanes designated for public transport vehicles, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessTech, Ethekwini municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela, confirmed that there is &#8216;currently an issue that was raised by the NPA in regard to fines&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, the city is looking at addressing this urgently,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This does not mean that the relevant Department has not enforced traffic law.
