But despite the fact that they may face these consequences, many pirates aren\u2019t concerned about breaking the law. But they should at least be concerned about \u201cbreaking\u201d their computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is because, as reported by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/game-of-thrones-has-the-most-malware-of-any-pirated-tv-show\/\"> <b>Cnet<\/b><\/a><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a recent report by security company Kaspersky revealed that malware disguised as episodes of popular TV shows became increasingly common in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The report\u2019s findings show that series including <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/tvseries\/jvquw58k-game-of-thrones\">Game of Thrones<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Stranger Things, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/tvseries\/1v093ezv-the-handmaids-tale\">The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/tvseries\/9bv3idbe-westworld\">Westworld<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are among the 31 most popular TV shows aired in 2018 that hackers routinely use as bait to secretly install malware on people&#8217;s computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kaspersky tracked the appearance of all these shows on torrenting and piracy sites, and of the 31 shows studied, Kaspersky found 126 340 cases of malware posing as episodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe data is sourced from millions of volunteers worldwide that share cybersecurity data with the company as part of its Kaspersky Security Network,\u201d said Cnet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><b>Kaspersky report breakdown<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kaspersky report showed the following findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Arrow were the worst-affected shows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fake Game of Thrones episodes accounted for almost one-fifth of malware (17 percent).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">33 different types of malicious threats associated with pirated episodes of Game of Thrones were uncovered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first and last episode of each Game of Thrones season were the worst for malware, with the first ever episode &#8220;Winter is Coming&#8221; one of the leading sources of malware.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Horror Story did the most damage, with each malicious file posing as an episode and reaching an average of three users.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two most popular yet very obvious pieces of malware were &#8220;Not-a-virus: Downloader&#8221; and &#8220;Not-a-virus: AdWare.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were no new episodes of Game of Thrones episodes released in 2018 \u2013 which makes the above stats even more alarming. Initial stats around Season 8, which is currently airing, suggest that HBO\u2019s fantasy series was downloaded or streamed illegally <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/game-of-thrones-season-8-premiere-piracy-illegal-downloads\/\">more than 54 million times<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> within 24 hours of airing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, even if you&#8217;re not worried about being fined or facing jail time for pirating copyrighted content or for streaming content without paying for it, then at least worry about the malware your computer will be exposed to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Streaming services like Showmax, Netflix and Amazon Prime offer excellent international and local content for which you only have to pay a small monthly fee, protecting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you from the risks of piracy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Game of Thrones is available legally in South Africa.
