much it costs to open a top fast food franchise in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a flat economy, South Africa&#8217;s fast food franchises sector has shown strong growth in revenue over the past couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>The franchising sector as a whole, contributed an estimated 15% to the country\u2019s GDP, according to the Franchising Association South Africa 2018 survey.<\/p>\n<p>A 2018 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/262667\/top-20-fast-food-franchises-that-make-the-most-money-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> <\/strong>by global analytics group Euromonitor showed that revenue across 20 major fast food franchises in South Africa increased between 2016 and 2017 \u2013 with brands like KFC and Steers showing impressive growth.<\/p>\n<p>The table below outlines the growth in revenue, as reported by Euromonitor, as well as how much money each brand makes per so many consider opening a franchise to be such a good business opportunity, as the potential revenues can certainly make up the costs of opening an outlet.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all of these franchises are open to public applications, with some requiring interested franchisees to make first contact before releasing financial information.<\/p>\n<p>Other restaurants &#8211; such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kfc.co.za\/franchising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KFC<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; do not currently accept applications at all.<\/p>\n<p>Below BusinessTech looked at the costs of opening some of the most popular fast food franchises in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>McDonald&#8217;s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/McDonalds.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-297050 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/McDonalds.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/McDonalds.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/McDonalds-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McDonald&#8217;s said that the cost of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcdonalds.co.za\/sites\/default\/files\/franchise.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">franchise<\/a> <\/strong>varies, and that actual costs are only determined when an individual franchise is offered to an applicant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The size of the restaurant, location, pre-opening expenses, inventory, selection of equipment, signage, seating and style of decor and landscaping will affect cost,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The estimated cost can be somewhere from<strong> R4 million &#8211; R6 million<\/strong>, depending on the type of restaurant and other factors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An applicant must have a minimum of 35% of the purchase price of a restaurant in unencumbered, non-borrowed cash.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Institutional finance through e.g. banks can be used to fund the balance (McDonald\u2019s does not provide financing or loan guarantees nor does it permit any form of borrowing from any third parties for purposes of financing the franchisee\u2019s initial 35% contribution).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nando&#8217;s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Nandos.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-153881\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Nandos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Nandos.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Nandos-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nando\u2019s charges a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nandos.co.za\/franchising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">franchise application<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0fee of\u00a0R25,000 (VAT inclusive) and a\u00a0franchise fee of<strong>\u00a0R230,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This fee includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to use and operate under the Nando\u2019s name and concept;<\/li>\n<li>Initial owner and staff training;<\/li>\n<li>Assistance with site selection and evaluation;<\/li>\n<li>Initial legal costs incurred in the conclusion of the Franchise Agreement;<\/li>\n<li>Assistance with Lease negotiations; and<\/li>\n<li>Initial pre-opening\/launch assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nando\u2019s also estimates that you will need approximately\u00a0<strong>R6,560,000<\/strong>\u00a0(plus VAT) for establishment costs when setting up your restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fish and Chip Co.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Fish-and-Chip.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-225637\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Fish-and-Chip.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Fish-and-Chip.jpg 612w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Fish-and-Chip-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Fish &amp; Chip Co <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fishandchipco.co.za\/franchise_info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimates<\/a> <\/strong>that the average setup cost for a franchise is <strong>R699,000<\/strong>\u00a0including VAT.<\/p>\n<p>Franchisees are also expected to pay an initial joining fee of R140,000 \u2013 however, this is included in the setup fee.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the construction of the store, the full amount of R699 000 needs to be paid in full, Fish &amp; Chip Co said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The full payment, as well as a signed Franchise and Lease Agreement, must be present before the commencement of construction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The balance can either be cash or \\financed through any institution of your choice. If assistance is needed with the balance that is financed, we will provide a business profile, which is a requirement of the bank,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-226131 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steers.jpg 796w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steers-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steers-768x543.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To become a Steers franchisee, you need to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/steers.co.za\/get-in-touch?own-a-steers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pay<\/a> <\/strong>a joining fee of R130,000 (excluding VAT). The total investment starts at approximately R1,207,000.<\/p>\n<p>Historically the company has offered three different\u00a0models including a cheaper kiosk, a standard store, and a drive-thru option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roman&#8217;s Pi<\/strong><strong>zza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Romans-pizza.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-297064 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Romans-pizza.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Romans-pizza.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Romans-pizza-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The initial joining fee for a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romanspizza.co.za\/franchise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roman\u2019s Pizza<\/a><\/strong> is <strong>R90,000<\/strong>. Roman\u2019s estimates that establishment costs are approximately\u00a0<strong>R2.3 million <\/strong>based on a 120m\u00b2 store size.<\/p>\n<p>Costs, however, do vary in accordance with various factors including the size of store, and exchange rates it said.<\/p>\n<p>Franchisees are also expected to have initial working capital of\u00a0<strong>R100,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pizza Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pizza-perfect.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-250877 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pizza-perfect.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"926\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pizza-perfect.jpg 926w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pizza-perfect-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Pizza-perfect-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 926px) 100vw, 926px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pizzaperfect.co.za\/own-a-store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pizza Perfect<\/a><\/strong> charges an application fee of R10,000 and a joining fee of R75,000.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a 90 square meter take-out unit, it said that you can expect to pay average setup costs starting from<strong> R950,000<\/strong> excluding VAT.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The setup costs will vary depending from site to site, on the size of the outlet, the product combination, the extent of the building works required to set up the outlet, costs and market conditions,&#8221;
