{"id":31712,"date":"2013-02-16T23:59:53","date_gmt":"2013-02-16T21:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=31712"},"modified":"2013-02-17T00:05:31","modified_gmt":"2013-02-16T22:05:31","slug":"mobile-phone-sales-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/31712\/mobile-phone-sales-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile phone sales decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report\u00a0 from <a title=\"Gartner\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2081-Gartner\">Gartner<\/a> has shown that global mobile phone sales dropped in 2012 &#8211; the first decline in 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gartner, worldwide mobile sales totalled 1.75 billion units in 2012 &#8211; down 1.7% from total sales in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the fourth quarter of the year (2012) saw a record figure of 207.7 million units sold &#8211; up 38.3% from the same period in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The last time the worldwide mobile phone market declined was in 2009, according to <a title=\"Anshul Gupta\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6065-Anshul-Gupta\">Anshul Gupta<\/a>, principal research analyst at Gartner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTough economic conditions, shifting consumer preferences and intense market competition weakened the worldwide mobile phone market this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for feature phones was weak (declining 19.3% year on year), with Gartner expecting to see the trend continue into 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at 2013, Gartner is more bullish, expecting smartphone sales to hit 1 billion units, and overall mobile phone sales to top 1.9 billion by year-end.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Apple vs Samsung continues<\/h3>\n<p>In the fourth quarter of 2012, <a title=\"Apple\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1648-Apple\">Apple<\/a> and <a title=\"Samsung\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1813-Samsung\">Samsung<\/a> together raised their worldwide smartphone market share to 52% from 46.4% in the third quarter of 2012, Gartner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe success of Apple and Samsung is based on the strength of their brands as much as their actual products.
