{"id":317224,"date":"2019-05-16T09:51:17","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T07:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=317224"},"modified":"2019-05-16T11:17:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T09:17:49","slug":"new-uber-competitor-launches-in-johannesburg-and-cape-town-and-it-allows-users-to-set-their-own-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/317224\/new-uber-competitor-launches-in-johannesburg-and-cape-town-and-it-allows-users-to-set-their-own-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"New Uber competitor launches in Johannesburg and Cape Town &#8211; and it allows users to set their own prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ride-hailing app <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=sinet.startup.inDriver&amp;hl=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inDriver<\/a> <\/strong>has launched in Johannesburg &#8211; bringing added competition for Uber and Taxify.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in Cape Town earlier in the year, the app\u2019s Real Time Deal (RTD) model allows passengers to set their own fare for their chosen route.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby drivers who receive notice of ride requests have three choices &#8211; accept the fare offered, ignore the offer or bargain for a higher price.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Thursday (16 May), inDriver said that 3,000 new drivers have already registered on the app.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to give the power of setting prices back into the hands of passengers and drivers by countering price surging used by other ride-hailing companies,\u201d said inDriver spokesperson Rifqa Carr.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Passengers using the app pay on average 20-30% less than with other services. While pre-approved rates in the app are used to guide users \u2013 the final fare is set by the passenger and driver in a real-time negotiation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Carr said that the service is suited to longer commutes, and is the more affordable platform for passengers also benefits drivers, with 0% commission charged for the first few months.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drivers have the freedom to choose whichever ride request they like, without any risk of being penalised.
