{"id":31778,"date":"2013-02-14T23:08:36","date_gmt":"2013-02-14T21:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=31778"},"modified":"2013-02-14T23:11:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-14T21:11:21","slug":"sa-spends-more-on-tech-than-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/31778\/sa-spends-more-on-tech-than-us\/","title":{"rendered":"SA spends more on tech than US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey finds that South Africans spent more on consumer technology in 2012 than the average US consumer, also beating many countries in Europe including the UK, Germany, France, and Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"http:\/\/www.accenture.com\/us-en\/Pages\/insight-2013-consumer-electronics-products-services-usage-report.aspx?c=glb_acnemalert_10000480&amp;n=emc_1212&amp;emc=19809104:emc-020813\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accenture.com\/us-en\/Pages\/insight-2013-consumer-electronics-products-services-usage-report.aspx?c=glb_acnemalert_10000480&amp;n=emc_1212&amp;emc=19809104:emc-020813\">Accenture\u2019s 2013 Consumer Electronics Products and Services Usage Report<\/a>, South Africans spent $940 (R8,352) over the past 12 months on consumer electronics in 2012, and intend on upping that spend to $1,164 (R10,340) in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>US consumers in comparison, spent $848 in 2012, and they intend on increasing that spend to $970 over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The survey questioned 11,000 consumers across 11 countries with South Africa representing 9% of the sample.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers in China spent the most, at an average $1,251 in 2012, lifting to $1,489 over the next 12 months &#8211; while consumers in Germany spent $927, with a predicted rise to $1,082 over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31795\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/consumer-spend.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31795\" class=\" wp-image-31795\" title=\"consumer spend\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/consumer-spend.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Consumer spend<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Types of device<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ownership of devices like smartphones, tablets and HDTVs have grown strongly over the past few years, as expected.<\/p>\n<p>41% of respondents said they intended to purchase a smartphone in 2013, 36% said a PC, 33% said HDTV, and 23% said a tablet.<\/p>\n<p>The ownership of a smartphone lifted from 28% in 2010, to 58% in 2012, while tablet ownership increased from 8% in 2010, to 25% in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>PC ownership increased marginally, from 91% to 94% over the comparative period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apps usage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two thirds of respondents said they use apps for information &#8211; namely news, weather and sports &#8211; while 53% said they used apps for navigation purposes.
