{"id":318296,"date":"2019-05-21T17:24:08","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T15:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=318296"},"modified":"2019-05-21T17:26:11","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T15:26:11","slug":"gigaba-and-mbete-withdraw-from-parliamentary-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/318296\/gigaba-and-mbete-withdraw-from-parliamentary-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Gigaba and Mbete withdraw from parliamentary list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former finance minister Malusi Ggiaba and former National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete will not be sworn in as members of Parliament on Wednesday morning (22 May).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/breaking-gigaba-baleka-mbete-withdraw-names-from-ancs-parliament-list-20190521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News24<\/a><\/strong>, ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe confirmed their withdrawal from the parliamentary list and said that all formalities have been undertaken accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Gigaba stepped down as home affairs minister and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/284398\/gigaba-resigns-as-a-member-of-parliament\/\">resigned as a member of parliament in November 2018<\/a><\/strong>, following court rulings that he had lied under oath. He was also implicated in the dealings of the Gupta family and the state capture scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Mbete had been criticised for not using her role as speaker to effectively hold former president Jacob Zuma to account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New appointments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took his first step toward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/318028\/ramaphosa-unveils-first-step-in-cabinet-cleanup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revamping<\/a> <\/strong>his cabinet after 8 May elections on Monday, removing environment minister Nomvula Mokonyane, who\u2019d been accused of taking bribes during a judicial probe.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa has made the fight against graft a top priority since taking office 15 months ago, replacing Jacob Zuma, whose nine-year tenure was marred by a litany of scandals.<\/p>\n<p>Mokonyane will take a senior position in parliament, ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule told reporters in Cape Town on Monday after a meeting of the party\u2019s decision-making National Executive Committee. Mokonyane has denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has also decided to appoint Thandi Modise as speaker of Parliament in place of Baleka Mbete and Pemmy Majodina as its chief whip, in place of Jackson Mthembu.<\/p>\n<p>Mbete and Mthembu are both senior ANC members who backed Ramaphosa\u2019s campaign to win control of the party in 2017, and could be in line for ministerial posts.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa is due to be sworn in on 25 May and name his cabinet a day or two later.
