PPS, a mutual financial services company,<\/span> has published its latest Graduate Professional Index, highlighting the jobs that South African professionals find most rewarding.<\/p>\n

The index is based on a survey of 5,837 professionals across every major job category, with online self-completion interviews completed during January 2019.<\/p>\n

The results show that the majority of respondents (68%) feel confident about the future of their profession in the country over the next five years.<\/p>\n

By comparison, 71% of the respondents said that they would encourage matriculants to enter into their profession – however, some professions are more assuring than others.<\/p>\n

The majority (89%) of accounting professionals said that they would recommend their career to matriculants, while 80% of professionals said that they would recommend engineering.<\/p>\n

At the other end of the scale, less than half (45%) of respondents in dentistry would recommend their profession.<\/p>\n

When asked why they would recommend their profession, the majority of respondents said the ‘skills are really needed in South Africa’.<\/p>\n

Just over a third (35%) of respondents said that their careers are personally rewarding, while less than one in 10 respondents said that their jobs are financially rewarding.<\/p>\n

When asked about the state of youth employment, 36% of respondents think this is a government problem which they must solve, and 30% believe that their professional associations are also looking for solutions.<\/p>\n

When asked why they wouldn’t recommend their profession, a third (33%) of respondents said that another profession would be more desirable.<\/p>\n

Worryingly, 20% of respondents said that there are no job opportunities in the country.<\/p>\n

This was a concern raised by 36% of engineers, 23% of respondents in the legal profession and 19% of pharma respondents.<\/p>\n
