{"id":319350,"date":"2019-06-01T18:02:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T16:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=319350"},"modified":"2019-06-02T11:05:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-02T09:05:29","slug":"this-is-how-much-you-should-be-tipping-a-car-guard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/319350\/this-is-how-much-you-should-be-tipping-a-car-guard\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how much car guards get tipped in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BusinessTech recently surveyed readers on how much they tip car guards.<\/p>\n<p>The survey had 4,911 respondents with just under half (43%) indicating that they tip around R5.<\/p>\n<p>Just over a quarter (26%) indicated that they tip R2, while 10% of readers indicated that they tip R10 or more. A large number of readers (22%) said that they do not tip at all.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech&#8217;s poll results are mostly on par with findings made by industry bodies, with a 2018 report <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psira.co.za\/psira\/dmdocuments\/research\/PSiRA%20Car%20Guard%20Report%20(003).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> <\/strong>by Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) finding that 89% of South Africans tip\u00a0car guards, whereas only 11% indicated that they did not tip.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the most commonly noted reasons for tipping include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To gain good quality service in future;<\/li>\n<li>To reward good\/ quality service;<\/li>\n<li>To gain social approval or to avoid social disapproval;<\/li>\n<li>To conform to internalised tipping norms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319390 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard.png 298w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard-193x300.png 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PSIRA&#8217;s data shows that approximately 45% of respondents tip between R4 to R7, and 25% tip between R8 to R11.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 18% of respondents would pay car guards between R1 to R3.<\/p>\n<p>In line with BusinessTech&#8217;s survey, only 3% of the respondents in Gauteng and Eastern Cape would pay R20.00 or more.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319392 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"761\" height=\"708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard-2.png 761w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Car-guard-2-300x279.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Harassment and perceived threat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PSIRA also asked respondents whether they had ever been harassed by a car guard.<\/p>\n<p>From a national perspective, most of the respondents (77%) indicated that they had not been subjected to harassment, whereas 23% indicated that they had been harassed by car guards.<\/p>\n<p>In the Western Cape, almost half (48%) of respondents said that they had been harassed by a car guard.
