Telkom is seeking an equity partner to help build more mobile-network towers as the former South African phone monopoly seeks new ways to increase revenue away from its core, fixed-line business.<\/p>\n

The Pretoria-based company may also sell some of its 1,332 properties to raise cash for the project, CEO Sipho Maseko said in an interview on Monday. Telkom combined towers and real estate into a new unit called Gyro as part of a restructuring two years ago.<\/p>\n

“We expect that with an equity partner and selling off some of the properties that are not core and that we are not using anymore we can scale our tower business quite quickly,” he said after Telkom reported full-year results.<\/p>\n

The book value of the company\u2019s property portfolio is between R10 billion ($691 million) and R12 billion, the CEO added.<\/p>\n

The shares jumped after his comments and climbed as much as 13.6% to R98.20, an all-time high. They were trading at R94.97 at 14:51 in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

Telkom is looking to invest in high-growth businesses to offset the long-term sales decline at the fixed-line division.<\/p>\n

The operator\u2019s mobile-unit was a standout feature of Monday\u2019s earnings statement, increasing revenue by 58% and subscriber numbers by 86%.<\/p>\n

Telecommunication towers are used by mobile-phone operators – including Telkom Mobile – to extend coverage and offer high-speed data services such as 4G and 5G. Telkom has about 6,500, with a plan to build 2,000 more over the next three years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith South Africa getting ready to roll out 5G there will be a lot more towers required,\u201d Maseko said. \u201cAnd the Gyro team is well placed to capitalize on that.\u201d<\/p>\n
