{"id":319698,"date":"2019-05-30T14:51:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T12:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=319698"},"modified":"2019-05-30T15:06:11","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T13:06:11","slug":"a-shocking-number-south-african-households-are-living-on-less-than-r2500-a-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/319698\/a-shocking-number-south-african-households-are-living-on-less-than-r2500-a-month\/","title":{"rendered":"A shocking number South African households are living on less than R2,500 a month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stats SA has published its latest annual General Household Survey, looking at key statistics across South Africa\u2019s eight major metros.<\/p>\n<p>The survey covers face-to-face interviews with 20,908 households (including multiple households), where the results were extrapolated to represent the 7.5 million households (23.6 million people) living in major metros.<\/p>\n<p>StatsSA highlighted the following key metrics: access to basic services like water and electricity, level of education, travel times and other social welfare indicators.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the data set, the survey includes information on poor households, and the high levels of poverty that still persist in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to Stats SA, of the 7.5 million households in major metros, approximately 28% are classified as poor &#8211; where monthly expenditure is less than R2,500 a month.<\/p>\n<p>Of these 2.1 million poor households, almost 700,000 have children aged between 7 and 18.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Poverty.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-319740\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Poverty.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"929\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Poverty.png 929w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Poverty-300x78.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Poverty-768x199.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 929px) 100vw, 929px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The situation is most dire in Manguang (MNG) and Buffalo City (BFC) where 40.3% and 39% of households are living under R2,500 a month &#8211; followed closely by eThekwini (ETK).<\/p>\n<p>The City of Cape Town (CPT), meanwhile has the lowest rate of poor households (17.7%), ahead of the City of Tshwane (TSH) and the City of Johannesburg (JHB), at 25.9% and 26.8%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Access to food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further, the survey data shows that 1.2 million of these poor households describe their access to food as inadequate &#8211; including over 260,000 who describe the situation as severe.<\/p>\n<p>This represents just under 16% of all South African households across the metros, with the City of Cape Town coming worst off in this metric, and the City of Tshwane with the lowest rate.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Food-access.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-319750\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Food-access.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"923\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Food-access.png 923w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Food-access-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Food-access-768x289.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 923px) 100vw, 923px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New research from the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) found that, as of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfap.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/May-2019-Subscription.pdf\">May 2019<\/a><\/strong>, a family of four would need to spend R2,524 a month on its &#8216;thrifty&#8217; basket of basic foods.<\/p>\n<p>This represents, on average, 32.3% of a household&#8217;s monthly spend, the group said.
