{"id":321549,"date":"2019-06-05T09:41:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T07:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=321549"},"modified":"2019-06-05T09:41:18","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T07:41:18","slug":"black-south-african-executives-told-to-steer-clear-of-state-owned-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/321549\/black-south-african-executives-told-to-steer-clear-of-state-owned-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Black South African executives told to steer clear of state-owned companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Black Management Forum (BMF) has <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bmfonline.co.za\/index.php\/innerleft-center-right\/press-statements\/214-bmf-calls-for-government-to-develop-a-clear-governance-framework-for-state-owned-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> <\/strong>on black executives to not apply for senior appointments within state-owned companies (SOCs) &#8211; at least until the government has developed a clear governance framework for these institutions.<\/p>\n<p>This governance framework must also outline the role of the minister of public enterprises, who BMF president Andile Nomlala has accused of &#8220;clearly overreaching his authority and behaving like a de facto chief executive officer within some SOCs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The BMF is shocked by the resignations of two seasoned black executives \u2013 Phakamani Hadebe and Vuyani Jarana from Eskom and South African Airways (SAA) respectively &#8211; within the past two weeks,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a time when some SOCs were reasonably well-run under the leadership of black people such as Reuel Khoza, Thulani Gcabashe and Peter Matlare.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, SOCs have become a slaughterhouse for skilled black leaders and executives whose reputations get tarnished because of factors that are beyond their control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nomlala said that a number of other black leaders and executives are on the verge of submitting their resignation letters due to &#8216;intolerable levels of political interference&#8217; and the &#8216;failure of the government to fully support them&#8217; and address the capital structures and funding models of their struggling SOCs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Balancing act<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South African Airways (SAA) CEO Vuyani Jarana tendered his resignation last week, bringing more headaches for the troubled state airline.<\/p>\n<p>His resignation follows hot on the heels on the announcement that Eskom CEO Phakamani Hadebe would also be stepping down.<\/p>\n<p>This may put minister of public enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, in a tough position as he battles to balance the books at the struggling state-owned enterprises while continuing to clear out corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom\u2019s debt is approaching R500 billion ($35 billion), according to data compiled by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/317300\/south-africas-debt-to-gdp-could-top-70-if-eskom-isnt-reined-in-moodys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>from public records, including bonds and issued loans, up from about R370 billion a year ago and is compounding the difficulty the government faces in formulating a turnaround plan for the troubled utility.<\/p>\n<p>In April, SAA said it was moving closer to an\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/314254\/saa-nears-debt-agreement-with-lenders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agreement<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with lenders to extend R9.2 billion rand ($642 million) of debt \u2013 a deal that would buy the unprofitable state airline more time to restore its battered finances.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/320859\/saa-ceo-vuyani-jarana-resigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SAA CEO Vuyani Jarana resigns<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Black Management Forum (BMF) has called on black executives not to apply for senior appointments within state-owned companies (SOCs) until the government has developed a clear governance framework for these institutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":282908,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9872],"tags":[7753,26],"class_list":["post-321549","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-black-management-forum","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/321549","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=321549"}],"version-history":[{"count":13,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/321549\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":321601,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/321549\/revisions\/321601"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/282908"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=321549"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=321549"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=321549"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
