{"id":321947,"date":"2019-06-06T18:00:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T16:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=321947"},"modified":"2019-06-06T17:39:47","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T15:39:47","slug":"this-is-how-many-south-africans-are-moving-to-new-zealand-every-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/321947\/this-is-how-many-south-africans-are-moving-to-new-zealand-every-month\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how many South Africans are moving to New Zealand every month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Statistics New Zealand has published immigration statistics for the year <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stats.govt.nz\/information-releases\/international-migration-march-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ending<\/a> <\/strong>March 2019, detailing how many migrants are entering the island country each month.<\/p>\n<p>StatsNZ classifies migrants as overseas residents who arrive in New Zealand and cumulatively spend 12 of the next 16 months in the country. The duration of stay is based on observed travel histories from linked arrival and departure records.<\/p>\n<p>The data showed that 152,200 migrant arrived between March 2018 and March 2019, an increase of around 8%. When factoring in migrant departures (96,100), StatsNZ said that New Zealand saw an annual net migration gain of 56,100 people.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, local citizens were the largest group with 36,700 (\u00b1 500) arrivals over the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The next largest groups were citizens of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China \u2013 18,200 (\u00b1 300)<\/li>\n<li>India \u2013 14,000 (\u00b1 200)<\/li>\n<li>Australia \u2013 8,400 (\u00b1 500)<\/li>\n<li>South Africa \u2013 7,900 (\u00b1 200)<\/li>\n<li>Philippines \u2013 7,800 (\u00b1 100)<\/li>\n<li>United Kingdom \u2013 7,800 (\u00b1 200).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>South Africans heading for New Zealand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>StatsNZ&#8217;s data shows that the number of South Africans has steadily increased over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016\/2017 around 6,038 South Africans arrived in New Zealand, dropping to 5,842 in 2017\/2018, In 2019 this jumped to <strong>7,857 <\/strong>&#8211; an increase of over 2,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>This means that approximately<strong> 655 South Africans migrated to New Zealand every month<\/strong> over the last year &#8211; or just over <strong>20 people each day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are slightly lower on a net basis, taking into account the South Africans in New Zealand who left the country.<\/p>\n<p>Net South African migrations totalled 7,343 safe, is child-friendly, and for job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Historically these South Africans have entered the country on residence and work visas, however, the data shows that there has also been an increase in student visa-arrivals in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>A May 2018 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/248443\/these-are-the-top-countries-south-africans-are-emigrating-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>by\u00a0American think tank, Pew Research, estimated that there are currently 60,000 South African migrants living in New Zealand at the end of 2017 \u2013 the fourth highest migrant population outside of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pew Research, New Zealand is only surpassed by the\u00a0United Kingdom (210,000), Australia (190,000),\u00a0 and the
