{"id":322469,"date":"2019-06-10T10:52:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T08:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=322469"},"modified":"2019-06-10T10:52:18","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T08:52:18","slug":"webafrica-is-up-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/broadband\/322469\/webafrica-is-up-for-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Webafrica is up for sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet service provider Webafrica is for sale, and a few prominent ISPs, including Afrihost, RSAWEB and Vox, have been linked to a potential deal.<\/p>\n<p>Webafrica was founded by Matthew Tagg in 1997 as a web hosting company serving consumers and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the company entered the ADSL market with its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/11431-adsl-30-gb-for-r199-is-back.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>30GB for R199 special<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and rapidly grew its broadband subscriber base.<\/p>\n<p>Webafrica also became a strong fibre-to-the-home player in later years as fibre penetration increased in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business split<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 2005 to 2017, Webafrica offered its clients both web hosting and connectivity products and acquired many smaller providers in this space.<\/p>\n<p>Webafrica decided to split the business into two separate companies in November 2017 \u2013 Gridhost for web hosting and Webafrica for connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that the connectivity business has been struggling to turn a profit since it was launched in 2005, and that the split also served as an exit strategy for some shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>Webafrica\u2019s official company page states that it has 60,000 customers of which around 30,000 are fibre subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Webafrica for sale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Webafrica has now been put up for sale, with Standard Bank handling part of the process with interested parties.<\/p>\n<p>While Webafrica has been struggling to turn a profit, two well-placed industry sources told MyBroadband that the company\u2019s projections are looking positive.<\/p>\n<p>This positive outlook is rumoured to have attracted the interest of a few prominent ISPs, including RSAWEB, Afrihost, and Vox.<\/p>\n<p>It is, however, unclear which companies are officially bidding to buy Webafrica, and they may include a few big telecommunications players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No sale yet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/35096-tim-wyatt-gunning-the-new-web-africa-ceo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Webafrica CEO Tim Wyatt-Gunning<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0told MyBroadband that Webafrica has not been sold and that \u201cthe owners of Webafrica remain the same in all aspects\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that they remain focussed \u201con the rapid exciting growth of our business\u201d, which include the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/307930-webafrica-launches-telkom-fixed-lte-deals-with-no-contracts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>launch of its Telkom LTE products <\/strong><\/a>and the ongoing network migration.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked Afrihost, RSAWEB and Vox for feedback regarding their interest in Webafrica, but the three companies would not comment on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>RSAWEB CEO Mark Slingsby did, however, tell MyBroadband that it is actively exploring an acquisition strategy in the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsolidation of the market is the natural next step in the FTTH space.
