{"id":323653,"date":"2019-06-16T07:29:33","date_gmt":"2019-06-16T05:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=323653"},"modified":"2019-06-16T08:20:43","modified_gmt":"2019-06-16T06:20:43","slug":"sabc-warns-of-a-communication-blackout-as-it-runs-out-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/323653\/sabc-warns-of-a-communication-blackout-as-it-runs-out-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"SABC warns of a communication blackout as it runs out of money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is facing serious financial issues, and has warned that a communication blackout is &#8216;imminent&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sunday-times\/news\/2019-06-16-lights-or-salaries-sabc-woes-deepen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunday Times<\/a><\/strong>, SABC board chair Bongumusa Makhathini, said that the national broadcaster had to choose between paying staff and municipal accounts at the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>It opted to pay its staff and now owes the City of Johannesburg more than R13.5 million. However the broadcaster is still facing a serious shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m not sure how we are going to pay for salaries come end of June,\u201d said Makhathini.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have also not maintained any of our infrastructure and a communication blackout is imminent. We anticipated &#8216;Day Zero&#8217; in March, but we have managed to stay on air until now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Makhathini said that the broadcaster also owes signal company Sentech R317 million and SuperSport R208 million.<\/p>\n<p>However, it appears that government is not prepared to let the broadcaster fall away just yet. A department of communications spokesperson told the Sunday Times that it was in the process of considering a R3.2 billion bailout for the SABC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Failing state enterprises<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SABC is just one of a number of state-owned enterprises that is dealing with a major financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>According to the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/322335\/south-africa-has-no-choice-but-to-increase-funding-for-eskom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> National Treasury<\/a><\/strong>, South Africa has no option but to increase financial support for Eskom.<\/p>\n<p>The government approved a R69 billion ($4.6 billion), three-year bailout for the debt-laden company in February, but both finance minister Tito Mboweni and Eskom Chairman Jabu Mabuza have since indicated that it won\u2019t be enough.<\/p>\n<p>The enormous pressure of keeping the power utility afloat led to the resignation of CEO Phakamani Hadebe at the end of May.<\/p>\n<p>He was followed by South African Airways (SAA) CEO Vuyani Jarana, who <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/320859\/saa-ceo-vuyani-jarana-resigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tendered<\/a> <\/strong>his resignation at the start of June.<\/p>\n<p>In his resignation letter to SAA board chairperson JB Magwaza, Jarana unpacked how uncertainty about funding and slow decision-making processes were delaying the airline\u2019s turnaround strategy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The strategy is being systemically undermined, and as the group chief executive officer, I can no longer be able to assure the board and the public that the LTTS is achievable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whereas government injected R5 billion of funding in the 2018\/2019 financial year, a big chunk of that was used to fund creditors up to the end of March 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have not been able to obtain any further commitment from government making it very difficult to focus on the execution of the strategy,&#8221;\u00a0 Jarana said.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/322793\/the-one-way-ramaphosa-could-change-how-he-runs-his-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The one way Ramaphosa could change how he runs his office<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC) is facing serious financial issues, and has warned that a communication blackout is &#8216;imminent&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":209609,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5554],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-323653","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-media","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/323653","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=323653"}],"version-history":[{"count":9,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/323653\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":323699,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/323653\/revisions\/323699"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/209609"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=323653"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=323653"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=323653"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
