{"id":324403,"date":"2019-06-21T18:00:46","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T16:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=324403"},"modified":"2019-06-21T14:41:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-21T12:41:05","slug":"burnout-is-now-an-official-medical-diagnosis-here-are-4-signs-you-are-suffering-from-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/324403\/burnout-is-now-an-official-medical-diagnosis-here-are-4-signs-you-are-suffering-from-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Burnout is now an official medical diagnosis \u2013 here are 4 signs you are suffering from it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially recognised burnout as a medical diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Following an update by the group published at the end of May 2019, the condition now appears in the organisation\u2019s International Classification of Diseases, or the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/icd.who.int\/browse11\/l-m\/en#\/http:\/\/id.who.int\/icd\/entity\/129180281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0ICD-11<\/a><\/strong>, in the section on problems related to employment or unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBurn-out is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,\u201d the WHO said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(It) refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It is characterised by three dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;<\/li>\n<li>Increased mental distance from one\u2019s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one\u2019s job;<\/li>\n<li>Reduced professional efficacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Signs that you are being impacted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<span class=\"fn author-name\">Michael Musker, <\/span><span class=\"fn author-name\">a s<\/span>enior research fellow at the South Australian Health &amp; Medical Research Institute, the new definition of burnout should be a wake-up call for employers to treat chronic stress that has not been successfully managed as a work health and safety issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the era of smartphones and 24-7 emails, it\u2019s becoming increasingly difficult to switch off from the workplace and from those who have power over us,&#8221; he said in an analysis for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/are-you-burnt-out-at-work-ask-yourself-these-4-questions-118128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Musker, if you think you might be suffering burnout, ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has anyone close to you asked you to cut down on your work?<\/li>\n<li>In recent months have you become angry or resentful about your work or about colleagues, clients or patients?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel guilty that you are not spending enough time with your friends, family or even yourself?<\/li>\n<li>Do you find yourself becoming increasingly emotional, for example crying, getting angry, shouting, or feeling tense for no obvious reason?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time for change, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These questions were devised for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bjaed\/article\/17\/10\/334\/3865410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Kingdom Practitioner Health Programme<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and are a good starting point for all workers to identify if you are at risk of burning out.<\/p>\n<p>You can also complete the British Medical Association\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web2.bma.org.uk\/drs4drsburn.nsf\/quest?OpenForm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online burnout questionnaire<\/a><\/strong>, although it\u2019s tailored for doctors so the drop-down menu will ask you to select a medical specialty,&#8221;
