Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday announced more funding for embattled transport agencies Prasa and Sanral to upgrade train services and national roads in his 2013\/14 Budget.<\/p>\n
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa will get roughly R5 billion over the next three years to fund plans to renew its fleet.<\/p>\n
“The capital allocations to Prasa will ensure that the commuter fleet is renewed over a 10-year period from 2015\/16 onwards and the necessary complementary allocations made,” according to the estimates of national expenditure tabled in Parliament.<\/p>\n
The South African National Roads Agency will get an additional R156.2 million in the coming financial year, and roughly R1 billion a year for the following two years.<\/p>\n
These allocations follow last year’s Treasury lifeline of R5.8 billion to Sanral after massive public opposition delayed the implementation of e-tolling to allow it to service debt on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.<\/p>\n
