{"id":325337,"date":"2019-06-30T19:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-06-30T17:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=325337"},"modified":"2019-06-28T16:58:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T14:58:34","slug":"these-industries-pay-the-best-entry-level-salaries-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/325337\/these-industries-pay-the-best-entry-level-salaries-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"These industries pay the best entry-level salaries in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recruitment website Giraffe has released a new report looking at how much junior and mid-skilled employees are paid in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The report is based on more than 131,000 Giraffe job applicants who have registered since June 2018, with 64% of the applicants being female, and 36% male.<\/p>\n<p>The applicants were typically between 18 to 35 years of age (87%), while a combined 21% said that they had a diploma or university degree.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents in this sample earn between R1,000 and R90,000 per month, with the average earning at R6,400.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top industries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Giraffe&#8217;s data shows that the banking industry typically pays the best salaries in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Banking (which includes insurance) and IT are the best paying sectors but employ only 8% of the junior to medium-skilled workforce,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the data also showed that you don&#8217;t need a degree to earn an above average entry-level salary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The construction industry, for instance, pays welders and boilermakers an average salary of R11,500,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entry-level.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-325339 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entry-level.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entry-level.png 984w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entry-level-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entry-level-768x492.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 984px) 100vw, 984px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Giraffe found that retail is the largest employer in South Africa, but pays an average salary of just R4,540.<\/p>\n<p>The retail and hospitality sectors pay the worst, with supermarkets having the lowest paying salaries, followed by restaurants and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large proportion of employees in supermarkets (67%) and restaurants (50%), earn below minimum wage,&#8221; Giraffe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of 1 January 2019, South Africa\u2019s first-ever national minimum wage came into effect.
