{"id":32651,"date":"2013-03-03T23:07:17","date_gmt":"2013-03-03T21:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=32651"},"modified":"2013-03-03T23:09:34","modified_gmt":"2013-03-03T21:09:34","slug":"will-sa-mobile-operators-fall-to-the-lte-curse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/32651\/will-sa-mobile-operators-fall-to-the-lte-curse\/","title":{"rendered":"Will SA mobile operators fall to the LTE curse?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s mobile operators are all investing in <a title=\"LTE\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2608-LTE-Long-Term-Evolution\">LTE<\/a> network (often, incorrectly, referred to as 4G), offering higher speeds, lower latency and better spectral efficiency than older 3G technologies. However, this LTE investment may have it drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Executives from South Korea\u2019s <a title=\"SK Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7450-SK-Telecom\">SK Telecom<\/a> and <a title=\"KT Corp\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1638-KT-Korea-Telecom-Corporation\">KT Corp<\/a> warned that it is a challenge to make money from LTE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Korea, they are data crazy. We have unprecedented demand. We cannot handle it. But the issue we have is that they are not willing to pay enough. So, the fundamental problem is, can we make any money out of it?\u201d asked <a title=\"Suk-Chae Lee\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7451-Suk-Chae-Lee\">Suk-Chae Lee<\/a>, the head of KT Corp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe traffic increases but the revenue does not necessarily follow,\u201d said SK CTO Jae W Byun. \u201cWe have seen about a $13 increase in average revenue per user compared with 3G. So, it is good money but it may not be enough to justify the huge investment needed in LTE.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">South African LTE investments<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> and <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> are deploying LTE network by re-farming spectrum. With the <a title=\"Department of Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2129-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">Department of Communications<\/a> dragging its feet on handing out scarce spectrum, local operators did not have a choice other than to use existing spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Without access to enough suitable spectrum, South African mobile operators are at a big disadvantage in deploying LTE when compared to their international counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>This raises the question whether local operators will be able to make money from their investment in LTE.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">We need to roll out the best technologies: Vodacom<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_65030\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/65026-sms-pricing-mtn-vodacom-hit-back-at-cell-c.html\/attachment\/richard-boorman\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-65030\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65030\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65030 \" title=\"Richard Boorman\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Richard-Boorman.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Boorman\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Boorman<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Vodacom spokesperson <a title=\"Richard Boorman\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1703-Richard-Boorman\">Richard Boorman<\/a> said that it is definitely their plan to make money from LTE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to understand that much of the investment (e.g. transmission) would have happened irrespective of rolling out LTE. Overall, it\u2019s early days so difficult to speculate on the potential returns,\u201d said Boorman.<\/p>\n<p>Boorman added that Vodacom has to continue to invest in the best technologies to serve its customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure that there\u2019s a choice on whether to roll out faster technologies \u2013 we need to ensure that we\u2019re giving customers the best possible experience and support the latest developments in handsets and other mobile devices,\u201d said Boorman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLTE also brings other benefits in terms of increased efficiency and alleviating the issue of cell shrinkage during peak demand periods.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Form a consortium to roll out LTE: Cell C<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_50625\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/50597-cell-c-evaluating-double-opt-in-service.html\/attachment\/karin-fourie\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50625\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50625\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50625 \" title=\"Karin Fourie\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Karin-Fourie.jpg\" alt=\"Karin Fourie\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karin Fourie (Cell C)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cell C spokesperson <a title=\"Karin Fourie\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4455-Karin-Fourie\">Karin Fourie<\/a> said that the comment by KT Corp speaks to Cell C&#8217;s longstanding position on LTE in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the private sector is allowed to form a consortium with government entities to rollout LTE, it will overcome two key challenges: Capital expenditure and spectrum,\u201d said Fourie.<\/p>\n<p>Fourie highlighted that capital expenditure determines network rollout and cost, while spectrum determines speed and price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more spectrum a single entity has and can offer services through wholesale structures to other operators, the more cost and spectrum efficient the network deployment becomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, argued Cell C, then translates to lower capital and operational costs and allows the industry to offer better pricing with higher data speeds and delivers higher volumes of data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA national wholesale broadband network would address these challenges as spectrum would be allocated to that single entity. Capital expenditure per company would also be significantly less,\u201d said Fourie.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Incremental LTE investment not significant: MTN<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_68922\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?attachment_id=68922\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68922\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68922\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68922\" title=\"Serame Taukobong\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Serame-Taukobong.jpg\" alt=\"Serame Taukobong\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-68922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serame Taukobong<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Serame Taukobong\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5134-Serame-Taukobong\">Serame Taukobong<\/a>, MTN\u2019s Chief Marketing Officer, said that LTE is currently being rolled out in the 1800 MHz band, and that the incremental investment required to provide the service is minimal when compared to a new \u201cgreenfields\u201d installation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident that the current and future value propositions that LTE presents to our customers will be compelling enough for good adoption which gives impetus to our business model,\u201d said Taukobong.<\/p>\n<p>Taukobong added that MTN does not view LTE in isolation, but as an extension of the current data network, which is to provide additional capacity for the growing demand that is prevalent today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to stay ahead of the explosion in data services and bandwidth requirements, MTN continues to invest substantially in its network.
