{"id":327305,"date":"2019-07-04T09:25:36","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T07:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=327305"},"modified":"2019-07-04T09:25:36","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T07:25:36","slug":"south-africa-wont-consider-quantitative-easing-to-help-eskom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/327305\/south-africa-wont-consider-quantitative-easing-to-help-eskom\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa won\u2019t consider quantitative easing to help Eskom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s government won\u2019t consider using quantitative easing to help rescue troubled state power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, deputy finance minister David Masondo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe that something like quantitative easing will be able to help Eskom as the situation between South Africa and other countries is totally different,\u201d Masondo told lawmakers in Cape Town on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountries that have used quantitative easing had zero percent interest rates and that is not the situation here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eskom is saddled with more than R440 billion ($31 billion) of debt and isn\u2019t generating enough income to cover its operating costs and interest payments.
